Understanding Your Astrological Makeup

A Guide.

Astrology, the study of stars and space can be dated back to Mesopotamia in the 3rd millennium BC. Its original purpose was to help ancient civilizations decipher the course of life based on the positions of the planets and 12 astrological constellations (zodiacs). This ancient study aided the development of science, geometry, and the lunar calendar. It played an important role in the history of developing sciences and religion.

Now considered a “natural philosophy,” astrology generally reflects the relationships of celestial moments and bodies to social groups, nations, and humanity in itself. (So you and me!). In the 3rd century, Babylonians began to utilize planetary omens and positions to allow them to predict the course of someone’s life. This is still very commonly believed. You too, can very well use and utilize the course of space to determine your course of life. This guide to astrology is going to get you started; a deep dive into the astrological components that make up everything we are.

This post will contain a lot of information and will be pretty dense. I highly suggest taking your time to get through this post. Grab a notebook and take note of what resonates with or makes the most sense to you. The bottom of this post will include my complete natal birth chart to help you grasp a better understanding of how it all comes together.

Zodiac Signs

Most people are pretty familiar with what a sun sign is; your main sign. But we’re not made of just one sign. We’re made up of two others; a moon sign and a rising sign.

Your sun sign represents your outwardly and earthly appearance. It’s the sign that shows your character, personal identity, or ego. It represents your purpose of life and creative forces. This sign is where most of your personality traits come from.

Your moon sign represents how others perceive you in the world, but what you know about yourself on a soulful level. It’s the sign that shows how we express and deal with our emotions. It reveals your innermost needs and desires. This sign is where your shadow-self exists.

Your rising sign represents your emotionality and how you navigate it. This sign represents or masks the face we show to the world and to our environments. It shows how we cope with and adapt to change. This sign is where all of your emotions and projections exist, deep or shallow.

Your moon and rising signs are still zodiacs, and you can be made up of three of the same zodiacs, or two-three different zodiacs. I’m made up of three separate signs.

ARIES: March 21 – April 19: you’re independent, passionate, energetic, strong-willed, love tackling new goals and challenges, and enjoy flying solo.

TAURUS: April 20 – May 20: you’re honest, loyal, determined, are a combination of laid-back and hard-working, and have great attention to detail.

GEMINI: May 21 – June 20: you get along well with people (social butterfly qualities), you’re curious, deeply emotional, and love or appreciate tradition and routine.

CANCER: June 21 – July 22: you’re highly intuitive, compassionate, a great socializer even though you may prefer smaller circles, and have a great spirit.

LEO: July 23 – August 22: you’re strong-willed, intimidating, inviting, confident, and have a good assertion for life.

VIRGO: August 23 – September 22: you’re the picture of poise and elegance, you’re organized, focused, you enjoy aesthetics, chasing wisdom and learning, can be highly intellectual.

LIBRA: September 24 – October 22 (me!): you’re open-minded, compassionate, get along with anyone, deep focus on self-care and growth, confident, and like to make a good impression.

SCORPIO: October 23 – November 21: you’ve got a sharp edge but this isn’t negative about you, you live authentically and have a strong sense of independence, not always tough, usually a big softy.

SAGITTARIUS: November 22 – December 21: you’re brave, admirable, a great leader, always ready to take on new adventure and challenges.

CAPRICORN: December 22 – January 19: you have a perfectionism quality about you, a strong-sense of self, a great connecter with and leader of others.

AQUARIUS: January 20 – February 18: more introverted but you still have fun, you’re intelligent and intuitive, able to identity positivity and live more on the optimism side of life.

PISCES: February 19 – Mar 20: you’re empathetic, an asset to any team, supportive, gentle, virtuous, sometimes you struggle with dedicating time to yourself too.

The 12 Houses

Houses are the cosmic crystal balls. There are 12 that each represent something different about life. The houses are a map in the sky. When you were born, each planet was in a certain house. The locations of the planets at the moment of your birth and throughout your life can give you valuable insight to your direction and they all reside in these houses.

Your rising sign rests in the first house as it was the sign that rested on the horizon of the sky when you were born (your ASCENDANT sign). From there, your birth chart will show you that you may have multiple planets in certain houses while others may also be empty. All normal! Each house and planet plays a role in making you unique and your path of life and personality unique.

NORTH NODE: The nodes are physical spaces in the sky where the sun and moon would intersect their orbit path on the time you were born. The North Node (True North) is your higher purpose and calling in life. It is where you’re destined to go to achieve your true self.

SOUTH NODE: The South Node indicates worldly lessons that you came here to learn. In Vedic Astrology, this represents your Karmic past.

Aspects of a Planet

The way to tell where a planet is and what it means in combination with other planets.

CONJUNCT: 0° with another planet: amplifying and unifying

SEXTILE: 60° with another planet: compatibility and opportunity

SQUARE: 90° with another planet: difficulty and limitation

TRINE: 120° with another planet: support and balance

OPPOSITION: 180° with another planet: struggle and conflict

RETROGRADES: Retrogrades mean that it’s time to turn our attention inward and to tread carefully. Retrogrades are when planets go backwards in its orbit as viewed from Earth. Astronomers consider it an “optical illusion.” When planets take this direction, it’s important to take time with your self-care and interactions with others. Usually retrogrades are associated with a lot of negative and confusing emotions or situations, and are felt most strongly during the first and last week of the station direct.

Angel Numbers

Angel numbers are seen as meaningful signs or divine guidance from the universe or your guardian angels. Angel numbers are just one of the countless ways we receive guidance from these sources. They’re a cue for you to turn inward and listen to your intuition.

Angel numbers most commonly come from coincidental events like looking at the clock right at 11:11, or seeing your order number as 44 or being assigned locker number 555. If you’re paying attention, you’ll notice your guidance everywhere.

There are quite a few combinations of angel numbers so to make it more personal, you can calculate what combination is meant for you.

Calculate your angel number with the method below.

Add up your birthday’s string of numbers and then add that sum together.

EXAMPLE with my birthday: Sept (09) 24, 2001
— 0 + 9 + 2 + 4 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 1 = 18
— 1 + 8 = 9

My number combination is 99 / 999 / 9999.

Of course, each and all angel numbers can apply to your life if you’re looking for them. If you calculated your angel number however, and see it throughout your life more often than others, remember that that number is divinely yours.

Breakdown on the Number Combinations
