A Complete Intro and Guide to Crystals

An Intro to Crystals

Crystals have been used as a form of healing and as a way of harnessing spiritual energy for centuries. As the world of wellness continues to thrive, so too does interest in this ancient healing technique. There are many different types of healing stones, each with a different shape, structural makeup and meaning.

While some have more traditional aesthetics, others are made up of more rock like formations. Each are as unique and powerful as the other. The chemical structure of crystals is thought to give them a kind of memory, allowing them to power and hold different energies and capabilities. Each mineral has a different characteristic and meaning. For example, rose quartz is known as the ‘stone of love’, while amethyst is believed to have calming, stress-relieving qualities.

Setting Intentions With Crystals

All crystals hold some sort of healing quality. They all posses natural energy and are a great way to manifest life-changing intentions.

Many people use crystals to set intentions believing that the stone will harness this energy and channel it into the environment where it’s placed. But, to unlock the magical qualities of each stone, users are encouraged to care for their crystals by cleansing, charging and tactically positioning them around the home so that they can truly manifest the user’s intentions. Every dream is an intention but every intention requires action. These intentions are what creates your reality. And you can use crystals to get there.

This guide will get you closer to enhancing your goal-setting, personal resilience and energy sustainment. Your crystals will be your new best friend.

Choose the Right Crystals Based on Your Goals

Picking a crystal depends on the area you want to focus on. Physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual health. You can use them professionally or materialistically or to boost your self-care efforts. Crystals are multi-dimensional and multi-purposeful.

Picking a crystal (or anything that the earth provides) will also be based on what you’re drawn to. We’re all drawn to what we need most at the time; so when a crystal, rock, stick, leaf, pinecone, or anything that the earth provides catches your eye, use it. Your energies are connecting because you both need each other. Energy attracts. This is true for people and for things.

Again, the chemical structure of a crystal is made up of energy and holds all sorts of memory and capability. It will draw to you when it knows you need it.

Cleansing Your Crystals

Cleansing your crystals restores them to their natural state. There are three (3) simple ways you can cleanse your crystal.

Water: Water will rid any negative energy stored inside of the stone. Your stone should be completely submerged under to cleanse it, followed by patting it dry. A deep clean to the gem can be done by adding sage or lavender to the water.

Smudging: Smudging new crystals and crystals that need cleansed is a great way to restore and amplify their energies. Smudging is an ancient First Nation tradition that involves burning medicines gathered by the earth (tobacco, sage, cedar, sweetgrass). Smudging connects people to the Creator and earth as is a way to gain spiritual protection and blessings. The smoke created by burning natural herbs is thought to purify and unify the body’s soul, energy, and mind. Now smudging comes in all sorts of forms (smudge sticks, sage sticks, or incense with several scents) and is a great way to cleanse a crystal. All you have to do is run your crystals through the smoke.

Full Moon Cleanse: Leaving your crystals outside under the full moon for 24 hours is another great and effective way to cleanse them. The full moon holds powerful properties and is often seen as a “reset” to the coming month. Full moons symbolize letting go of limits and doubt and especially negative energy. Leaving your stones to cleanse this way is a sure way to restore their energies and properties.

Charging Your Crystals

Crystals also need to be charged to restore their energies but this is also the time to set an intention with them. Charging your stones can be a great opportunity in asking them for help in embarking on a new direction in life or reaching a goal.

When charging your stones, you have to visualize what you want from it and set your intention. You have to be open to their healing vibrations. Your intentions during these practices can be as big or small as you want or need them to be. Be sure to protect your crystal’s energies. Protecting them is protecting yours.

There are 5 methods of charging.

  • Hold the crystal in your non-dominant hand and imagine a white light surrounding the stone while you recharge the stone and set your intention.
  • Place the crystal under the moonlight or sunlight for 24 hours.
  • Tingsha chimes, singing bowls, or tuning forks can be used to recharge crystals as they absorb the vibrations of the sound.
  • Place the crystal that needs charging with other crystals such as amethyst, quartz, and selenite, which can absorb the energies of other crystals and regenerate them.
  • Go back to the earth and bury your crystal in the garden for 24 hours. If you don’t have a garden, pop your crystal into the soil of a flower pot.

Set and Activate Your Intentions

The best use of your gems comes from first clarifying the intentions of the gem you’re using. Once you’ve figured that out, you can activate the crystal. There are a few ways to do as such through harmonizing, directed thoughts, or “loud and proud.” You can set intentions as often as you want or need. Most set them at the beginning of every week or month. Keep your stones present and remember to cleanse them often.

  • Harmonizing activation comes from rolling the cleansed crystal between your palms. Close your eyes and imagine both yours and your crystal’s energies are merging together. Think about the intention of your crystal and keep it positive.
  • Directed Thoughts activation comes from sitting in front of your crystal. Close your eyes and imagine that your crystal is filling with light. The impression should be that your crystal is becoming so bright that you wouldn’t be able to look at it. Your consciousness and the stone’s energy should fuse together, sealing a pure and glowing intention.
  • Loud and Proud activation comes from holding the crystal in your left hand and sitting in natural light. Exclaim your intention aloud three times, feeling the crystal grow warmer and warmer as it absorbs your positive energy. This is similar to an affirmation. So exclaim it and claim it.

A pendulum is a tool that is used to connect to your higher self and spirituality by asking questions to help guide, clarify, and raise your self-awareness. The pendulum itself is simply a small object attached to the end of a string, and can be made out of wood, crystal, gemstone, glass, or metal.

It’s a very personal practice. A pendulum can be used in various scenarios where you just want to gain a little more clarity, connection, and a better understanding of something. You can ask the pendulum questions about life, love, health, career, money—whether simple or complex.

You can consult your pendulum whenever you feel the need, but think of it as more of a spiritual practice. Recommended to use as much as you feel you need to or want to. Just like any other spiritual practice, it’s a personal preference. You can use the pendulum to help you with any problem, troubling situation, or something you need more clarity around. The pendulum can only answer “yes” or “no” questions so make sure to phrase questions in a way that will allow you to get a clear answer.

All you do is hold the pendulum and allow it to connect and move with your energy. A pendulum will connect to you and your energy in that moment of that day. It’s okay if you sometimes receive answers and then find the answer may have shifted another time. As you work with the toll, you’ll learn how it moves and how it responds to questions.

How To Use

Cleanse: Cleanse the pendulum with sage, outside under a full moon, or soaking it in sea salt (if the material or crystal is water and salt friendly), or simply by holding it under cold tap water.

Prep: When looking for clarity or guidance around a situation, have more than one question prepared about the topic to help you gain as much insight as possible and as much guidance. The pendulum might not always work. Sometimes a pendulum will not want to answer or not be open to answering a particular question at that time. This can be shown as a separate directional swing or the pendulum might simply remain still.

Learn How it Moves: It’s key to learn what is ‘yes’ and what is ‘no’ before asking the pendulum a question. You have to figure out how it will speak to you. Take a moment to find a comfortable seat and quiet your mind. Take a few deep cleansing breaths to open up and clear your mind, body, and spirit. Holding the pendulum in your dominant hand with the chain or top link between your thumb and index finger, ask ‘show me yes’ and ‘show me no,’ or ‘what does yes look like’ and ‘what does no look like.’ When you do this, the pendulum will either swing vertically, horizontally, or in circular motions. Take note as to what each answer looks like. Ask for the answer in neutrality as well.

Start With What You Know: To get the pendulum going, ask questions you already know the answer to. Ask if your name is what your name is, and ‘do I live in [insert city].’ This can help you connect with the pendulum and get to know its directional swings and how it will communicate with you.

Stay Open: Using a pendulum is all about being at ease. Just like when you are going through a meditation, try to simply allow the pendulum to communicate freely with you. The more open you are to receive, the easier you and the pendulum can communicate. With any practice, you can enjoy the experience and trust in your ability to connect because you already have your own answers.

Keep your stones and rituals close.

When your gems have been activated, keep them close to you. Wear it as a necklace, a bracelet, keep it as a pocket friend, or in a bag —anywhere on your person. Keeping your stone is a crucial part in bonding the energy between you two. Keeping the crystals near you help the refocus of your self-determination and milestones.

We all need positive vibes and good energy as life will inevitably head into uncertainty. Healing crystals just may be the way to obtain inner peace.

It’s time you find your zen.
